Treasures of the Pharaohs

This exhibition brings the world of the pharaohs to life through 130 exquisite works spanning 3,000 years of history. From towering stone statues to gilded masks to intricate gold jewelry, these objects reveal the power, beauty, and beliefs of the ancient Egyptians. The exhibition begins with the pharaoh, who was seen as both a king and a god. It then expands to explore the people and beliefs that shaped Egyptian life. Explore how Egyptians viewed death not as an ending, but as a new beginning — and the elaborate rituals they created to prepare for it. Objects found in tombs — such as jewelry, cosmetics, tools, and furniture — offer a glimpse into daily life and values. A special highlight is the US debut of objects from the Golden City, a newly unearthed workers’ community near Luxor. The suddenly abandoned city is a moment frozen in time, much like Pompeii. Together, these artifacts illuminate one of history’s most extraordinary civilizations.

Attendees can explore the region's transformation through photographs, spanning from the Gold Rush era to the modern tech boom. This collection offers a compelling visual history of development and change in Northern California.

Rooted in Place: California Native Art

Part of the reimagining of our Arts of Indigenous America galleries, this is the first in a series of exhibitions that highlights specific regions of Native California. This installation explores the interconnections between art, ceremony, and the land in the Karuk, Yurok, Hupa, Tolowa, Tsnungwe, and Wiyot communities of northwestern California. The exhibition presents collection highlights alongside major loans, acquisitions, and commissions by contemporary artists.

Celebrating the vibrancy and diversity of Indigenous American art, this new presentation features beloved collection highlights alongside major acquisitions and commissions by contemporary artists. In the most extensive reinstallation of this collection in 20 years, each of the four refreshed galleries explores a different aspect of the theme “Relationship to Place.” Developed with Native scholars and in consultation with communities of origin, the project centers Indigenous values and voices. Works spanning over a thousand years of history in all types of media challenge expectations about what Native art is and can be.

From the Gold Rush to the tech boom, this exhibition chronicles the cycles of urban construction and destruction in the Bay Area through photographs. The photographs in this exhibition chronicle these cycles of urban settlement, including the building and renewal of San Francisco before and after the 1906 earthquake and fire, the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge and Bay Bridge, and the development of San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood. Above all, the works reveal how periods of growth and decline have always been part of the story of Northern California, and attest to the continued resilience of this land and its inhabitants.
