In his largest installation ever, Jacob Hashimoto made over 70,000 kites from bamboo and special paper, all in different shapes, ranging from squares and circles to hexagons and more. Arranged in a floating assemblage called Giant Arc, these patterns are inspired by the landscape of the Bay Area. Join the artist from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and learn how to make a kite of your own while immersed in the installation, then stay and keep creating. No experience is required, and all ages are welcome!

The American Bookbinders Museum
Workshop: Japanese Stab Binding
This beginner-friendly stab binding technique is a perfect project to start your bookbinding journey. It is generally called a Japanese stab binding, but was used throughout Asia. It’s a great option for binding pre-cut sheets of paper, no folding or gluing required. The simplicity of preparation and materials makes it the perfect “starter” project but is practiced by bookbinders of all levels. Stab bindings are very popular in Japan dating back to the Edo period. Characteristics of this binding are an exposed spine with single sheets of paper sewn through the cover using several recognized sewing patterns; the patterns are the focal point of the binding. Since the spine is sewn through the cover the resulting book does not lay flat. No experience necessary, but class-size is limited to 12 people per workshop. Reserve your spot today! The Fall of the I-Hotel + Manilatown Manang Screenings
The Manilatown Heritage Foundation presents a newly restored edition of Curtis Choy’s landmark 1983 documentary chronicling the historic struggle to save San Francisco’s International Hotel. Newly re-scanned from a pristine 16mm print and digitized in 2K, this restoration brings renewed life to one of the most important works in Asian American cinema. Documenting the decade-long campaign to prevent the eviction of the hotel’s elderly Filipino and Chinese tenants, the film captures a defining moment in the fight for affordable housing, civil rights, and community self-determination. More than four decades after its release, remains both an essential record of Filipino American history and a powerful reminder of the enduring struggles against displacement and inequality. This restoration was completed by the Manilatown Heritage Foundation in collaboration with the UCLA Asian American Studies Center and FotoKem.
