San Francisco’s biggest South Asian celebration is back, and for the first time ever, it lands at Yerba Buena Gardens, one of downtown’s most iconic arts and cultural destinations. On July 24 and November 13, Yerba Buena Gardens, Jessie Square, and Yerba Buena Lane will transform into a vibrant, open-air celebration of music, dance, food, and culture—bringing together community, creativity, and connection in the heart of downtown. As the only outdoor celebration of its size and scale in the Bay Area dedicated to South Asian culture, Bhangra & Beats continues to create a space that is both rooted in tradition and alive with the energy of the Bay. At the heart of it all is the vibrant Bhangra & Beats atmosphere, a family-friendly celebration where traditional Punjabi rhythms meet Bay Area energy. Non Stop Bhangra collective will once again lead the experience with its signature mix of interactive dance lessons, beautiful performances, live dhol drumming, DJs, and an open dance floor, all flowing into a lively marketplace with food vendors, local makers, community activations, restaurant and bar specials, and family-friendly activities. Come for the music, stay for the energy. Whether you’re dancing, eating, shopping, or just taking it all in, there’s something here for everyone.

Join us for a lecture from Cléa Massiani on Progress Art Studios (PAS); radical spaces that support artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities while disrupting normative assumptions about art, labor, and value. From the early interest in art within the context of mental illness or Art brut, to the studios’ emergence from deinstitutionalization movements beginning in the 1960s, this talk situates PAS within a lineage of artist-led, independent spaces, alongside organizations like A.I.R., Just Above Midtown, and Southern Exposure, that resisted dominant institutional models of production and exhibition. Central to this argument is a structural claim: PAS don’t simply critique the art world’s value system from the outside—they build alternative governance models, funding architectures, and staff-curator-artist relationships that materially produce new forms of artistic value and labor. Massiani locates this history in collaborative projects both inside and outside cultural institutions, using the 1997 exhibition Whipper Snapper Nerd, curated by Harrell Fletcher at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, as an early, pivotal moment. Creativity Explored is a San Francisco–based nonprofit that supports more than 140 artists with intellectual and developmental disabilities to create, exhibit, and sell their art.
